Pacing Break 2006

I have now entered the miraculous world of digital photography. I wasn’t expecting to do so until my parents revealed their gift to me for my 21st birthday: a Kodak EasyShare C643 (whoever comes up with these names needs to go back to marketing school). What’s odd is, I didn’t even give my parents ideas for a birthday gift this year, and yet they somehow came up with the one that was on my mind; I simply couldn’t afford to buy my own camera, so I was holding off on it. I guess my parents do know a thing or two about me after all. :-P

You can find my pictures from break here. In case you hadn’t heard, I went to DC for a couple of days (Sunday and Monday) during break because my dad was giving a talk in DC on Monday. If any of you have some photography tips for me, I’d love to hear them.

A few notes about the trip:

1) I also went to the Washington National Cathedral, but my pictures in there were far too dark to be worthwhile. Some decent images can be found here. Also, how could I not love a place that has this? Too bad I couldn’t see it.

2) I wasn’t able to meet up with either my friend in DC or my friend from Lehigh who said she might be in DC on Monday, but I did run into ANOTHER friend from Lehigh while walking around the zoo. Combined with seeing the Lehigh van on Sunday, it appears that I can’t escape Lehigh, no matter where I go.

3) As you can probably tell from the pictures, I really liked the FDR Memorial. However, another one that you should check out in DC if you have the time is the Korean War Memorial (pictures here). I hadn’t seen that before, and it ended up being a good decision to swing by there.

4) On Monday, my mom and I had several encounters with the homeless, including one where my mom got a biscotti thrown at her (it was her biscotti, and she was trying to help the guy out by giving it to him; apparently, he didn’t want it). Is it just me, or is homelessness on the rise in this country? My family and I have had a few run-ins with panhandlers in Salisbury too, something that never happened prior to recent years, which is why I ask.

I said last time that I would talk about being 21, but I’m out of time now, so I’ll save that for another week.

Before you go on some "the US has bad economy" rant, you crazy liberal you (OF COURSE you'd like the FDR memorial), let me just remind you that D.C. has a lot of homeless and bums. Always had, always will. The upsurgence of pan handlers in Salisbury is simple consequence of Salisbury growing as a town.

That, and there's our awareness. They're more likely to talk to older individuals (like we've become), than children. Also, I've seen a larger number of them at late night, a time I wouldn't have hung out a few years back.

And Nate was just one ill-timed coincidence.

Let's move to Snow Hill - it'll be safer there.
