I don't have time for a proper post right now, but to satiate those of you who are desiring news from me (all 2 of you, I'm sure), here's the very short version of how I'm doing: well adapted to my new roommate-less life, work's going swimmingly, and I've still got a wonderful girlfriend. In other words, can't complain.
Anyway, the real reason for this post is to share something you might not have heard about today's market collapse. As you probably read, the market had its biggest one-day loss in history because the House of Representatives failed to pass a bill that would bail out the country's major financial institutions. But do you know what that bill was called?
"To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide earnings assistance and tax relief to members of the uniformed services, volunteer firefighters, and Peace Corps volunteers, and for other purposes" (source: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll674.xml)
"... and for other purposes"? I think $700 billion qualifies as a little bit more than "other purposes." They couldn't mention the cost or the purpose for the $700 billion somewhere in that long title? Could there be a more blatant attempt to drum up support for a bill by hiding its main purpose behind an unobjectionable, patriotic title? Well, maybe not quite as blatant as the Patriot Act...
No wonder most people can't stand politics, when stupid games like that take place.
