I have a little bit more time in this cyber cafe, so I wanted to let you all know that I safely made it to France. The only snafu I hit was that my suitcase didn't make my flight to Strasbourg last night, but it was at my hotel's desk this morning (it's 8:30am right now). Other than that and the rain, everything's going great so far.
I hadn't realized (although I had guessed) that French keyboards were different from American ones. Fortunately, I found an easy way to change it to mimic the American layout. If I were a hunt-and-peck typist, that wouldn't be a good idea, because now the keys say that they're one thing (for example, 'a' on the French keyboard) when they're actually something else ('q', in the case of that key). I hadn't figured out this trick yesterday, so typing out an e-mail to my parents was a painful experience.
The Syracuse students who are in the program with me all seem rather amenable, and I even went with 3 of them to an "Irish pub" last night, which was a good time, especially once we took our drinks outside (it was rather stinky and crowded inside). Before that, we had dinner at a restaurant on the river that runs through Strasbourg (I think they called it the "Ile" river, which I think means "island").
To get to my hotel, I had to use my French a little and was pleasantly surprised that some people actually spoke back to me in French (in one case, the person didn't know any English, so I had to use French)! Maybe my French is better than I thought. Works for me.
Ok, almost out of time at this cyber cafe and it's time for breakfast. Talk to you guys later!
