I had some people over last night, preventing the completion of this tale until today. Without further delay…
The construction of the sandy stronghold that Chris V and I were building had to be cut short, as we had a schedule to keep (Chris’s sister, who I neglected to mention was our driver for this trip, needed to be home by 3 pm). Before leaving OC, we wanted to fit in a game of mini-golf. Conveniently, Jolly Rogers was across the street from us, complete with Jungle Golf course. There, we enjoyed 18 holes of friendly competition. During the first half, I was trailing Chris by a few strokes, but I lost my focus in the second half and lost to him by 5 strokes, if I recall correctly. Still, 2nd place is better for me than I’m used to when I play with my cousins and brothers, so I was fairly pleased with myself. Unrelated to the game, there was a mother duck and its obscenely cute ducklings swimming in the water flowing around the course. I feared for their health, as the water was the same color as toilet cleaner. However, they drank it, and none of them keeled over during the time we spent there, so I’ll assume the best.
We were sufficiently tuckered out after that game and proceeded to make our way back to Chris’s house. By the time we arrived, we (minus Chris’s sister, who had other affairs to attend to) had revitalized enough to be in the mood for a dip in Chris’s pool. After acclimating to the waters (not any warmer than the beach), I suggested a rousing game of “Marco Polo”. Oh, how I would regret that decision. (By the way, the only reason I’m reciting the following story is because Chris brings it up every chance he gets, so I’d rather you hear it from me first. Also, in retrospect, it’s pretty funny.)
For half-an-hour or so, everything was peachy-keen, but we had closed off the deep end of the pool, as Emily wasn’t confident enough in her swimming ability to allow the game to encompass the whole pool. Quickly, I became bored with the game, because there were only so many places to hide in the shallow end of the pool. We came up with a compromise solution: I would hide, Chris would seek me, and Emily would act as his eyes from the safety of the steps at the shallow end.
As for what happened next, let’s put it this way: one thing led to another, and the next thing I knew, I was being dragged down into the water by Chris, who had latched on in a very uncomfortable way (use your imagination). Once he let go and I resurfaced, all I could do to overcome the shock of what had just happened was laugh and alert Chris to his blunder, as he hadn’t even noticed what he had done wrong! Not long afterwards, the party was put on hold, and I returned home for dinner. Later that night, I returned to his house for some “Harvey Birdman” and “Strangers with Candy” viewing, a relaxing end to a busy day.
Let me briefly summarize Sunday so that I can get to bed: in the afternoon, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 with Chris, Emily, and Neil (decent action movie that was generally confusing and unable to live up to the pedigree of its predecessor), and Lighthouse diner later that night with the above plus Sam and Nate (a good time, especially with the hilariously disgusting story that Chris told at the end which caused Emily to all but disown him).
I think that covers it all. If you were with me during the weekend, and I missed something, let me know. Otherwise, that’s all I’ve got for now. Before I go, I should mention that I finally broke down and bought a PS2, almost exclusively for the purpose of rocking out with Guitar Hero (thus the late evening post). Expect to hear a report from me next weekend or so about how that’s going.
