Summer Ambitions ’06

Every summer, I have certain plans and goals that I establish for myself. They’re like New Year’s resolutions, but I find the beginning of the summer a better time to institute lifestyle changes than the middle of the winter. This summer, I’d like to share them with you. By making these public, I’m attempting to ensure a certain level of accountability, maybe even improve my chances of achieving my ambitions. Also, I normally don’t write them down, so by doing that, I can focus more effectively and, with some luck, follow through with more of them. According to my recollections, I generally get done less than half of what I want each summer; let’s see if I can improve that ratio.

1) Sabbath – The book that I mentioned last post that I’m reading stresses the importance of having a day dedicated to rest, recreation, and reflection. The more I think about it, the more I like the concept, so I’m going to give it a shot. At least for the summer, Sunday will be a day of no work and no exercise. Instead, I will collect my thoughts and, if some of them are weighing particularly heavy on my mind, write a blog post about them. Hopefully, this ritual (beginning with this post) will have a positive effect on my mental health. As for the physical…

2) Exercise – I’ve always had a problem with this one. During the summer, I’ve typically been very lazy, especially after I started working my senior year. What’s been my normal routine when I get home from work? Plop down on the couch, watch some TV, eat dinner, play video games, go to sleep. At Lehigh, I walk virtually everywhere, so I have a minimal level of fitness there; at home, all that evaporates. This year, I plan on changing that. Every day except Sunday, I’m going to exercise for at least half-an-hour. I’ll be switching off between walking and doing some sort of strength training, along with ultimate frisbee whenever possible.

3) Soul-searching – Here, I have several separate but related goals. To start, I have some thinking about the future to do, figuring out what I’m doing with my life and where I’m going with it. I’m not overly concerned that I’m on the wrong path, but it’s always a good idea to periodically reexamine these things. Also, there are aspects of my personality that I’m going to work on: I want to learn to stress out less, be less of a control freak, and continue to work on my moral character (for example, I judge others too quickly based upon superficial observations).

4) Reading – Finally, like every summer, there are some books I intend to read. Most of them are religious in nature: The Left Hand of God (in progress), Dante’s Divine Comedy (I’m up to Paradiso), The Bible (from cover to cover for the first time), and various other books on the reading list that I recently made. In the past, work has been an excellent place to get some reading done, so we’ll see if this summer is any different.

You guys doing anything similar? If so, I’d be interested to hear about it.

1) Sabbath - I'll one up you by making EVERY day of the week the Sabbath!

2) Exercise - always tough during the summer. With an occasional bike and run, I do laps in the pool Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays! I've somehow gotten involved in the triathlon club (my roomie is the president, go figure). I'm going to try and go to the beach as much as I can and swim. I'm not crazy enough to join Sam (again) at her kickboxing class, but maybe we can hassle her to go jogging sometime. Rule of thumb: the more people you run with, the more fun! Then again, I may just purchase (pending on my pay) a punching bag and put in a good 1/2 hour of dents every day.

3) Books - think we've been over this one, Mrs. Dalloway.

4) Women, women, women - I'm on the prowl for serious seeing as how RIT is the WORST place to pick up women (next to the Seminary). It's just a matter of figuring out where to meet people. I think even I'm too immature to be at a bar, sometimes. Hmmm....

5) Writing - actually, more of this than reading. I need to come up with a 2 quarter film idea, and punch out a script(s). Maybe I'll start that novel my teacher has been nagging me to write...

6) Concerts! Already have a Belle and Sebastian concert lined up. Too bad Radiohead tickets sold out (really fast) in PA. They're showcasing new stuff, too!

7) Random artistic projects.

8) This goes without saying - making every moment a blast.

That's roughly mine. Got any more idling around? I'm sure I do.

(10 days!)

The Bible (from cover to cover for the first time)

I do this a lot. No contemporary translation is worth the paper it's printed on; I suggest you begin with the Authorized Version, then move on to the Tyndale (not quite proper for a "cover to cover" read - Tyndale was executed before he could complete his translation of the Old Testament). I think you may be pleased with poetry of the former, and the clarity of the latter.

Neat, that seems like some pretty good goals. I don't know if you read or not, but my New Year's resolution was to eat more cheese, and while I think I'm doing a pretty good job, I have a small goal of trying a new cheese every week or so. You could try the same! If not cheese, then other forms of food. One week, go out to some Indian; next week, Thai. It always makes me feel more cultured.

I always try the book thing, too. Last year, I read "Fight Club" (which I HIGHLY recommend) and 1984. This year, I've read "Memoirs of a Geisha," "Anna Karenina," and "We," which is the book that inspired "1984." Very interesting, and also recommended. I'm currently working on "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" (That book is utterly hilarious, by the way). I haven't read as much as I'd like to, but I think I've got a good start.

Maybe another goal would be to explore your creative side. This might be the art student in me talking, but try and dabble in the arts. I know you've been trying the improv thing, now go to visual arts. Maybe take a day to draw a landscape, or vent your frustrations with a moody abstract piece. It's very calming once you stop worrying about whether or not it's "good."

Well, that's all I got for now. Sorry I'm so long-winded. :)

JAY! I just spent some time reading your posts--I haven't kept up with you as well as I'd have liked. I like the summer goals though! If you ever want to play frisbee or go for a jog, I'm game! I know you're about to get busy with work soon, and soon so will I, but there are still the weekends and evenings.

I've got that exercise goal in mind. I went to the gym a bit at school (pfft who does that?), but not as much as I'd liked. Reading books is definitely on the list, except I can't find the one I was reading earlier this week-The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time...it disappeared very randomly a few nights ago. I swear I left it over there...

Anywho, glad you're doing okay. I plan on reading this more often and updating my own website, which as you can see right now, is being used for...embarassing purposes. That's right, I'm using it to embarass people :)

Goodnight and Goodluck!
